Oak House

Oak House
Oak house, Timber doors and windows

Olsen's Euro doors & windows were specified for use in a truly radically designed, award winning eco-house constructed in a small Buckinghamshire village on the edge of an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Chilterns.

The five bedroom luxury home, Oak House, clad in sustainable green oak timber was designed by Baca Architects and built by NDB Interiors. The total design and construction cost came in just short of £1m. Oak House received a special commendation - the Evening Standard's Best New Home award - and was a finalist for three separate LABC awards.

Eco-friendly credentials were of paramount importance to both the owner and the architect, which is why Olsen's Euro products fitted the bill. The engineered sustainable pine timber profiles have a good u-value of 1.5W/m2K, and the frames can be factory lacquered or painted to any RAL colour using water-based micro-porous products. The manufacturer has certification to IS9001 and IS14001 quality and environmental standards.

One of the key reasons Baca Architects chose products from Olsen was because the window frames could be supplied in a specific factory applied colour. Baca Architects director Robert Barker said "The green oak facade meant that the house would mature with age, turning more silver over time. Therefore we needed a window frame colour that would compliment the house not only when it was finished but in years to come as the building changed. Olsen provided three samples to our specification, which we tested against wood samples to choose one which was slightly lighter than the green oak and darker than the silvered oak. The colour and windows turned out to be an excellent choice. Olsen was also able to manufacture the curved fanlights and large doors between the living room and outdoor terrace, which was a key feature of the design."

What's more, Olsen's full-height glass doors were also used with great affect along the eastern edge of the house in order to open up the kitchen onto a patio and the upper level of the garden.

The windows have an impressive technical specification with casement and reversible hinges, multi point locking, externally beaded, drainhed and ventilated desgin and 24mm double glazing. They are BFRC rated to class B/C and tested to BS 7950 (security test required to comply with "Secured by Design"). Olsen's competitive price included a 5 year guarentee. What's more, all of Olsen's products are backed by the universally accepted HomePro insurance scheme which is designed to give domestic clients money back peace of mind in the event of any unexpected problems.

In addition to the home's sustainable oak timber walls, other green credentials include a green sedum roof to encourage birds and insects, kitchen work tops made of recycled glass, a combination of heat store boiler, stratified hot water tank, wood-burning stove, solar thermal panels and photovoltaic cells which together provide 20 percent renewable energy use.
