Inward vs Outward Opening Windows Part 2

Inward vs Outward Opening Windows Part 2

Part 2 of this blog will look into the technical performances and differences between inward and outward opening windows.

To learn more about the functionality of these windows, and their differences, read Part 1 of the blog here.

Inward opening windows are generally more thermally efficient than their outward opening counterparts. This is due to the extra seals that can be found between the opening sash and fixed frame, for example our Elite 92 range has 4 of these gaskets, whereas the Euro range only has 1 gasket.

There is always exceptions to the rules however, as our Scandia Passive window demonstrates, with 3 of these gaskets it actually performs outstandingly well for an outward opening window and is actually a Passive House certified component.

With weather performance, the outward opening window system works extremely well, and this is another reason why this type of opening of favoured in the more northern parts of Europe. As winds blow against the windows, the sash is slightly pushed against the frame, creating an even tighter weather seal. This is not to say that inward opening windows do not perform well, in fact they are still very good against driving winds due to their strong ironmongery system which ensures the sash is as solid as possible against the frame.

Much like many other aspects of specifying doors & windows, the ultimate reasoning behind picking what system to go for is always a personal and bespoke choice for each individual project, which is why Olsen’s helpful staff will always go out of their way to ensure you understand the pros and cons of each system and help you decide what is right for you and your project!
